A CAT tool is a system that compares the current source sentence against previously translated sentences and makes suggestion for the translation by using translation memory (TM). CAT tools allow building and reusing of translation data.

A translation memory is a database of sentence pairs containing source and target texts. A CAT tool is a very powerful tool as it enables reuse of archived translation data so that when translating updated or revised technical documents (especially manuals), the translation process does not need to be performed all over again.
CAT tools are essentially different from machine translation because it supports translator's work by suggesting previous translated texts after comparing sentences rather than performing automatic translation.

- The TM stored in the server analyzes the new source sentence and compares it with previously translated sentences and suggests sentences with highest marches .
- The source file texts are categorized into 100% match, fuzzy match (partial match) and no match, and the translator performs translation task according to the match level .
- The Quality Management Team makes final correction of the translated texts and saves them in the TM server, making necessary amendments to the existing TM.
